Hosting Left 4 Dead 2 for a group that actually plays
Dedicated versus listen servers, the campaigns worth adding, and the settings that keep a four-player run from desyncing at the finale.

Most Left 4 Dead 2 sessions run on somebody's listen server, which works until the host has a bad evening and takes the campaign with them. A dedicated server costs very little here - the game is undemanding - and it removes the single biggest cause of a run ending early.
It is not a demanding server
Four players and the AI director fit inside 2 GB comfortably. What matters is that the machine is close to your players and is not sharing a CPU with something noisy, because the finale is where a stutter is least welcome.
- Custom campaigns need installing on the server as well as the clients.
- sv_consistency keeps a mismatch from becoming an unexplained disconnect.
- Versus needs eight slots, which changes very little about the sizing.
