A Valheim dedicated server that stays up
Why a dedicated server beats hosting from the game, what crossplay changes, and the world-saving behaviour that surprises people.

Valheim will happily host from inside the game, and that is the problem: the world lives on one player's machine, exists only while they are playing, and their frame rate is everybody's tick rate. A dedicated server separates the world from the people visiting it.
Crossplay and the join code
Crossplay is on here by default, which means people on Game Pass and people on Steam can play together. The join password is generated for you rather than left blank - Valheim requires one, and servers that ship with a default one get found.
Saving is not continuous
The world is written to disk on an interval, not on every change. Stopping the server through the panel triggers a save first; killing the container does not. This is the one thing worth knowing before you restart a Valheim server mid-session - use Restart, not Stop and Start, and nothing is lost.
- 2 GB - a handful of friends, one biome at a time.
- 4 GB - a full group with several bases and a mapped-out world.
- 8 GB - a large persistent world, or a server with mods.
Backups matter more here than in most games, because a Valheim world is a single file and a corrupt one takes everything. Slots are on every tier and restoring is a button.
